Our bed and breakfast is in a beautiful, historic Greek Revival style manor located in the charming small town of Rocky Mount, Virginia. The home was originally known as The Grove due to the many magnificent trees on the property. Built in 1854 by John Stafford Hale for his second wife Margaret Ingles Saunders Hale, the land was provided by the Saunders family.
We are situated right in town within convenient walking distance to many local attractions, yet, with the beautiful scenic property surrounding the inn, you will enjoy the peaceful relaxation of the country setting. Directly across the street you can get a great meal at The Bootlegger Cafe which is located in a renovated Coca-Cola bottling plant with the original signs freshly restored.
Chef Michael started his cooking career at the ripe old age of 9 working for many years at a scratch seafood restaurant on Cape Cod.
Then several years as a trained meat cutter where he learned the art of food preparation.
Chef Michael loves being creative with his menus and cooking for others in small intimate settings.
This was our 4th stay at the Early Inn- We had quite an enjoyable time to spend with our family here in Rocky Mount. We decided to use Chef Michael’s exquisite culinary skills to delight my in-laws on Christmas Eve for a very special dinner. His 4-course dinner is definitely something to write home about, it is that good! We started with a shrimp-on-Brie, on a Parmesan crisp, followed by the most amazing oyster dish I have ever had: Virginia oysters baked in a brie puff pastry and soft cheeses.
The dinner continued with a mescaline greens, homemade pickled beet salad, caramelized onions and dressing. For the main entree, we were enticed with haddock on a bed of asparagus with cream sauce, with scotch flash fried sweet potatoes. The meal was paired perfectly with wines selected for dinner and finished with an incredible creme brûlée and ice cream. The best part of the night was the incredible service, hospitality and generosity of our host, Chef Michael. We felt like a part of the family.
Truly exquisite dining and one of the best meals I’ve ever had. We will be back again and again. You made a member of our family who is a self proclaimed seafood hater eat everything with relish- We tip our hat off to you!
Thanks again for the wonderful stay, our breakfasts, and the wonderful holiday memories made around your lovely table to give us an unforgettable Christmas experience.
James and I enjoyed our weekend here at the Early Inn. It was so relaxing and we enjoyed every minute! Our needs were all met. Keri, you are the best. Could not have asked for a nicer time! Love, Linda and James Riddle

Magnificent home and grounds. We loved our stay. Thank you for the warm hospitality!
The Inn is beautifully renovated, keeping its integrity and originality but adding convenience of modern day living. It is tastefully decorated with luxurious bedrooms and bathrooms. (Landscaping, vegetable and herb garden will be added this year). Breakfast was sumptuous. Our adult children were very impressed with our accommodation.
Although we added an hour to our trip by veering off to Rocky Mount Virginia instead if Rocky Mount, NC, we were all happy to spend the night at this beautiful inn. My husband and I plan to return in the Fall for the town’s craft show and music at the concert hall.
Impeccable Inn. Very great experience. The nicest Inn we have ever stayed in. Highly recommend it.
If you are looking to step back in time while still enjoying today’s modern amenities, then the Early Inn at the Grove is the place for you. Nestled in the heart of Downtown Rocky Mount, Virginia, this pre-civil war home is magnificent with its original paned glass windows, beautiful crown molding, high ceilings and overall grand style architecture. We stayed in the Magnolia Room with its cornet windows and elegant decorations. The private bathroom was extremely large with a soaking tub and a double shower. Keri is a most pleasant and welcoming innkeeper. We look forward to visiting there again.
The inn was so inviting, beautiful and unique. The Kirsch family is very impressed and appreciative and we found the innkeeper warm and charming.
We say thank you for making us all feel special and welcome!
On a recent visit to Rocky Mount and the Early Inn, we were taken aback with the hospitality of Keri and the people of Rocky Mount. The atmosphere at the Early Inn was warm, welcoming, and relaxing. The grounds are peaceful. The place has real historical character. The rooms were well furnished and comfortable. We highly recommend the Early Inn, and have put it on our list of places to return to.
